A map of Chongming Island provided by the police indicates construction areas during the National Day holiday, with different colors indicating different shut-down periods.

Travelers heading to Chongming District during the national holiday may face congestion of up to 17 hours on expressways, police said as they advised tourists to stagger their trips to avoid heavy traffic.

Due to the pandemic, trips to nearby suburbs, particularly Chongming with its rich eco lifestyle, are favored by many parents as their children would have to undergo 14 days of quarantine if they left the city.

Expressways heading to Chongming, including G1501, S20 and G2, are the most likely to experience heavy traffic. Congestion is predicted between 11am and 12am on September 30.

On September 6, a 17-hour traffic jam is predicted between Chenhai Highway and G1501.

Due to preparations for the National Flower Expo next year in Chongming, many roads are under construction. The police released a map indicating these areas to help travelers.

To ensure traffic flow on the G40, electronic and video surveillance equipment will be used to manage illegal activities such as using emergency lanes.

To avoid congestion, travelers are being advised to take public transport including ferries.

A joint command team including police in Chongming and the Pudong New Area, and firefighters from Changxing Island and Shanghai Chengtou has been set up to cope with road accidents, along with emergency facilities such as tow trucks and cranes.
