Pearl Studio scholarships honor Audrey Wells

The late screenwriter, director and producer Audrey Wells
The UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television has received US$100,000 in scholarships from the Shanghai-based Pearl Studio in memory of screenwriter, director and producer Audrey Wells.
Wells, a former UCLA student, died on October 4, 2018. Her final screenplay for the “Over the Moon,” an animated musical film developed at Pearl Studio, is currently in production for a 2020 release under the direction of award-winning animator Glen Keane.
“We all greatly mourn her passing, but are confident that this brilliant gift will honor and shine a bright light on her wonderful creative voice to use the power of story for good in the world; to illuminate our common humanity; and to bring joy to us all,” said Teri Schwartz, dean of the UCLA school.
The scholarships will be awarded to screenwriting and directing students and include a one-week residency at Pearl Studio. Recipients will also have the opportunity to be mentored by an industry professional who worked with Wells.
“It was a remarkable and profoundly moving experience to collaborate with Wells on her final screenplay,” said Peilin Chou, Pearl Studio’s chief creative officer. “It is our greatest hope that these scholarships will inspire, nurture and creatively support a new generation of filmmakers who will carry on her spirit of strength, inclusivity, compassion and healing for decades to come.”
Wells’ writing credits include “A Dog’s Purpose,” “The Game Plan,” “George of the Jungle,” and “Under the Tuscan Sun” which she also directed.
Her screenplay for “The Hate U Give,” based on author Angie Thomas’ critically acclaimed 2017 novel, was turned into a film released in theaters on October 5, 2018, one day after her death.
