Regions south of the Yangtze River celebrated in oils
An art lover admires oil paintings displayed at Suzhou Art Museum.

Jiangnan, referring to the regions south of the lower reaches of Yangtze River, has long been eulogized by poets and artists.
An exhibition entitled “Impression of Jiangnan: Canvas Created by Chinese Artists” is currently running at Suzhou Art Museum in neighboring Jiangsu Province.
Launched in 2015, the biennial national exhibition is an important window for Chinese oil painters.
This year's event features more than 200 oil paintings, 175 of which have been selected from 5,200 candidates, plus other paintings by renowned Chinese artists.
Xu Jiang, chairman of the China Oil Painting Society, said at the opening: “This exhibition not only displays the charisma of the landscapes in Jiangnan, but also reveals the elegant and poetic atmosphere wafted over the region. The depiction under the theme of Jiangnan might help the Chinese oil painters to find a particular path in exploring their Oriental oil language via the shimmering water, the stone bridges and traditional buildings.”
