“The Rookies,” an action/comedy spy movie by Hong Kong filmmaker Alan Yuen, will hit cinemas in China on July 12.

The film is also Ukrainian-born American actress Milla Jovovich’s first appearance in a Chinese film.

Yuen is the scriptwriter of the 2015 box-office sensation “Monster Hunt.” He also wrote the screenplay for “The Rookies,” a hilarious story of a group of rookie spies who embark on an international adventure.

“It is a different spy film as the heroes in the story are formerly quite ordinary people,” said Yuen. “The film is also about their dreams, and how ordinary people do extraordinary things.”

Jovovich plays an professional spy who mentors the novices.

“I am a big fan of Chinese culture and ‘Monster Hunt’,” said Jovovich. “I had never starred in an action comedy before.”

She added that she was attracted by the script. The young Chinese actors she worked with in the movie also impressed her as they learned very quickly.

Many amusing scenes in the movie are likely to change people’s impression of the leading actress who starred in classic horror sci-fi film series “Resident Evil.”

The film was mainly shot in Budapest. It features visually impelling scenes of gunfights and car chases.
