Jason Feeny's 'Groovy Things' on show at Joy City

This summer, why not take a close look at more than 500 toys by Jason Freeny, a New York-based sculptor and toy designer, at a 500-square-meter exhibition area at Jing’an Joy City through August 20.

Freeny’s toy dolls are made in such a way that you can see much more than you expect. It’s more like an anatomic study of a toy, as you can see both the exterior and the interior of it.

At the center of the exhibition area, there is a 3-meter-high balloon animal anatomy toy doll “Pneumatic Anatomica,” which was Freeny’s first piece of work.

“I first started exploring the inner workings of characters through illustrations,” said Freeny at the opening ceremony of the exhibition.

“In 2007, I took my favorite childhood birthday party souvenir, the balloon dog, and interpreted its inner anatomy using the 3D modeling tools.”

The exhibition also displays Freeny’s working table and schematic drawing sheets.

He utilizes his industrial design prototyping techniques to create hyper-polished, handmade sculptures.

Toy lovers can have fun at exploring the Freeny’s work, such as Bugs Bunny, Bathing Ducky, Gummi Bear, Muay Thai, Anatomical Easter Bunny, Yokels, NONO Panda, Fire Quacker, Skull Bomb, XXRAY PLUS Elmo Mono, XXRAY superman Steel, XXRAY Wonder Woman Gold and Gnomeboy Anatomy.

If you are a fan of “SpongeBob SquarePants,” Freeny has prepared his anatomic version of the show’s characters, like Squidward, Patrick Star, Mr Krabs, Plankton, Fish, Sandy Cheeks and Lady Fish at the gift shop.
