A dancer's improvised dance and comedy show
What happens when a dancer is featured in a talk show? You may find the answer in the humorous dance show “Sky High,” which is being staged at Shanghai International Dance Center this weekend.
During the 45-minute set, 27-year-old dancer and choreographer Fu Binjing will share her personal story and thoughts about life as a professional dancer in a playful way. The performance has been promoted as a mixture of contemporary dance and improvised stand-up comedy.

The Hunan Province native started learning classical and Chinese folk dance as a child. She joined Guangdong Modern Dance Co after college and became an independent dancer and choreographer last year.
Fu said “Sky High” is a story about herself, who joined the profession out of love and passion, but had several doubts about the career. She wanted to explore art from diverse aspects and create her own style and hence became an independent artist.
Commissioned by Shanghai International Dance Center, “Sky High” presented a 15-minute segment at the inaugural China Contemporary Dance Biennial showcase session last year. As a consequence it received invitations to perform overseas at several international dance festivals.
The one-person show allows the audience to follow Fu and ponder questions such as: How does modern life affect the creation of dance? What’s a performer’s view over commercial dances created for market need? And, apart from technique, what do audiences expect from a dance?
