Summer feast of goat meat runs through October in Songjiang

The annual goat meat festival kicked off recently in Zhangze Old Street of Yexie Town and will run through October.

It's a tradition among the people in Zhangze to dine on goat meat while drinking a cup of liquor in summer to improve their health.

Dishes include goat meat soup, noodles and pulpy goat meat.

In addition to an opening ceremony that featured the famous local straw dragon dancing, the festival also has a cooking competition, a rural night camp and a local night fair.

Themed events include activities for children to experience a shepherd's life or do sand painting. There's also orienteering to promote red culture and the local intangible cultural heritages, a cellphone photo competition and a TikTok short video competition.

"In the next two months, we'll invite both citizens and visitors to fully enjoy the goat meat culture and the charming rural scenery of Yexie Town," said Ma Lianping, chief of the Yexie Rural Tourism Development Co. To better promote rural tourism, the event organizer has also invited Jialv Vegetable Cooperative and 88-Mu Farmland minsu (a Chinese-style B&B) to co-launch the event.
