Nearly 100 overseas Chinese students and graduates presented their startup projects to incubators and investors in Yangpu District on Saturday as part of the district's efforts to drive entrepreneurship and attract overseas talents.

The winners of the Chunhui Cup, China's top innovation and entrepreneurship competition, showcased 30 innovative startup projects and high-tech inventions to over a dozen of incubators, investment institutes and high-tech park operators in Yangpu.

The winning projects are mainly focused on the fields of bio-pharmaceutical, modern service, electronic information, new energy and environmental protection.

The students and graduates are from well-known universities in 14 nations, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, France, German, Japan and Belgium.

Before the presentation, the winners were invited to visit the innovative parks and successful startup firms based in Yangpu, such as the New York-listed LAIX Inc, or Liulishuo, an AI-driven online English language platform, and AIWAYS Auto, a new energy vehicle manufacturer.

"I've learnt Yangpu has offered many preferential policies and there are many startup foundations to facilitate the business and life of us overseas entrepreneurs," said Du Enpeng, a PhD studied in the US. He developed a magnetorheological facility that can prevent and cure cardiovascular disease.

The activity aims to attract the top professionals, many of whom once served in multinational enterprises and research institutes, to establish their businesses in the district, according to the bureau.

The district government has released a high-level talent innovation and entrepreneurship program to support talent, especially the overseas professionals to start their businesses in Yangpu. For instance, professionals who studied or worked overseas and are deemed top talent will receive a million yuan (US$145,444) in assistance fund for startup projects along with 500,000 yuan in housing subsidy.

"I'm eager to join the trend of mass entrepreneurship in Yangpu as well as to help to drive the Sino-Spanish cooperation on medical service," said Pei Yu, a registered doctor in Spain who presented a medical service named CU Doctors.
