Five employees have been detained after four companies' truck drivers were involved in serious traffic accidents, Shanghai traffic police said on Monday.

To further crack down on truck accidents in the city, police last year introduced what they called "deep investigation" of lethal traffic accidents and in the case of serious violations of safety rules, company representatives or people in charge would be held responsible.

The current suspects were alleged to be responsible for four accidents in December last year and this month.

In one accident at the crossroads of Songhui Road W. and Yushu Road in Songjiang District on December 14, a truck making a right turn knocked down and killed an e-bike rider.

Police said its investigation had shown that Yang Rong, the manager responsible for safety at the Yunmeng company, had long failed to implement safety rules. Police said he could be facing a criminal charge of causing a grave traffic accident.

In another incident on January 14 at the intersection of Xinmiao Road No. 3 and Maixin Highway in the same district, an e-bike rider was also killed by a heavy truck.

Zhang Lianjun, legal representative of the Guangxing truck company, could face the same charge for overlooking the implementation of safety rules, police said.

Chen Cheng, Xu Dayang, vehicle managers at logistics company Haochang, have been detained after two people on a bike were killed when they were knocked down by a truck owned by the company on Cao'an Highway in Jiading District on January 6.

In the Pudong New Area, a truck owned by the Shiheng company hit a bus at the crossroads of Dongda Highway and Chuannanfeng Highway, injuring several passengers.

Fang Shunhai, a person in charge of safety at the company, was found to have connived at illegal modifications to the company's trucks and overloading, and could face a criminal charge of endangering public safety with dangerous means, police said.
