Many scientific breakthroughs have been made in Shanghai over the last five years. Details of some of these achievements will be on display at ten sites across the city for the next year.
The first stop of the touring exhibition is Shanghai Science Hall at 47 Nanchang Road. The exhibition opened on Friday and is set to last for about a week. It will then move on to the Changyang Campus, an innovation focal point in a former textile factory in Yangpu District.
A video describes how scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences' institute of neuroscience in Shanghai created the world’s first cloned monkey.
Gene editing in monkeys is paving the way for progress against human disease. It requires a much smaller number of monkeys and it produces much more precise results for pre-clinical tests.
Early this year, Ministry of Science and Technology ranked it the most important scientific achievements of 2018.
Second place also went to local scientists.
Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' institute of plant physiology and ecology have created the first strain of yeast with only one chromosome, a breakthrough intended to support research on human cell aging and genetic mutation through telomere deterioration.
Mock ups of the strain of yeast are on display.
Other mock ups include narrow-body passenger jet C919, the world’s most powerful pulse laser, the molecular structure of GV-971 — the first drug to improve the condition of people with Alzheimer’s disease that is set to hit the market this year.
Besides “Made in Shanghai” achievements, the exhibition also shows how local scientists have contributed to the country’s scientific missions with a mock up of the Jiaolong deep-sea manned submersible, along with components and materials used in the Tiangong-2 space lab.
