Pudong International Airport will have two new hotels near its terminal buildings to meet increasing accommodation demands from travelers.

The InterContinental Hotel & Resorts and Holiday Inn, scheduled to open in 2024, will be located within walking distance of the T1 and T2 terminals.

The hotels will open as part of a new complex between the two terminals, the Shanghai Airport Authority said on Tuesday. The complex will also include dining and commercial facilities, as well as offices.

The Shanghai International Airport Co signed an agreement with InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), Shenzhen-based Excellence Group and two other partners on Monday to jointly develop the project.

The two new hotels will make up for the shortage of luxury hotels at the Pudong airport and meet the demands of travelers who want to spend the night, shop or hold business meetings at the airport. The two brands, both operated by IHG, can meet the different requirements of travelers, said Jia Ruijun, Party secretary and chairman of the airport company.

Currently, there is only the hostel-style DaZhong Airport Hotel between T1 and T2. The hotel, developed by Shanghai DaZhong Public Utilities Group Co, was built in 2008 and has over 700 rooms.

“The two new hotel brands are expected to enhance the competitiveness of the airport as an international air hub,” Jia said.

The Pudong airport handled 74 million passengers in 2018, including some 8.8 million transit travelers, a 5.6 percent increase on year.

Some 12 percent of travelers are transferring at the airport and many of them want to sleep overnight at hotels near the terminal buildings, according to the airport authority.

There are also increasing numbers of early and late inbound and outbound flights at the Pudong airport, driving demand to sleep overnight at the terminal buildings.

Shanghai's two airports together handled over 117 million passengers in 2018, making Shanghai the world’s fifth-busiest air hub after London, New York, Tokyo and Atlanta.

A series of expansions and renovations, including the building of the satellite terminal and a three-year renovation of Terminal 1 at Hongqiao, are helping ease the pressure.
