Residents, community officials and health professionals launched a citywide cleaning campaign on Thursday, the day when Chinese people honor icon of altruism Lei Feng.

This year's "learning from Lei Feng" is closely associated with coronavirus prevention and control.

Lei, a soldier who died at the age of 21 in August 1962, was known for helping people in need. Mao Zedong exhorted the masses to “Learn from Comrade Lei Feng” on March 5, 1963. Since then, March 5 is celebrated as a special day for voluntary activities.

This year, each district has organized thorough cleansing in communities, wet markets. garden corners and small roads to improve the environment and prevent the virus spreading.
