A woman surnamed Shi who works as a taxi driver was detained for five days after allegedly stealing from another driver, police said on Monday.

The driver who suffered the loss, a woman surnamed Zhu, reported her case to police in the Pudong New Area on April 5.

Zhu said she was missing 200 yuan (US$28) from her wallet, which was placed in her car, on April 2, but had no idea who could have taken the money, police said.

Zhu then recalled talking with Shi, a friend of her's, outside her car while they both waited to pick up passengers at a hospital around noon that day.

Police reviewed footage from surveillance cameras near the spot and saw that Shi reached into Zhu’s car while the two were talking and stole the money.

Shi was soon caught and, when confronted with the evidence, confessed to the theft, police said.
