Gifts were presented to five representatives of medics from the Shanghai No. 5 People’s Hospital who had helped fight COVID-19 in Hubei Province on Monday evening at a ceremony to kick off the Double Five Shopping Festival in Minhang District.
The gifts including a year of free car maintenance provided by Tuhu, candies from Perfetti Van Melle and Coca-Cola’s "We Love Wuhan" cans were to recognize their contribution to the nation's efforts in combating the pandemic and welcome them back to the city.
More than 80 enterprises were also honored for making donations during the pandemic with eight representatives appearing at the ceremony at the POPC shopping mall in Minhang.
After that, business representatives launched the festival by releasing a map showing residents where to buy with favorable discounts.
Chen Yujian, director of the district, said: “The shopping festival is being held around the district to encourage everybody to participate in fighting the pandemic, to boost the economy and promote consumption. We will combine online and offline shopping to drive consumption of all brands in all commercial complexes among all the people in Minhang.”
He said the six-month shopping festival will stimulate market vitality and consumption potential while enabling consumers to enjoy huge discounts.
A series of livestream sales activities will be organized to offer popular products at discounted prices.
At one event on Monday evening, Chen Dongfa, director of the Meilong Town in Minhang, offered four discounted products, including a coat and a pair of shoes from Hotwind, coupons for the Jeurong Hotel and Mujosh glasses. All the brands are registered or have flagship stores in the district. He modelled the coat, shoes and glasses when promoting them.
All the products were sold at around half price. The coat, for example, was sold at 199 yuan (US$28) compared with its original 399 yuan. The hotel coupons enable people to enjoy two nights of a family suite for 1,080 yuan, compared with the original 2,188 yuan price.
“The price is very nice for a family who would like to visit the nearby Jinjiang Amusement Park, where they can enjoy the amusement facilities and the night market,” said Chen.

“By participating in livestreaming activities, we would like to help local enterprises return to normal operations,” Chen said.
Districts officials, including director Chen Yujian and vice director Wu Bin, have all appeared on livestreams in the past week as a warm-up for the shopping festival.
About 130 enterprises have applied to take part in the webcasts to promote 538 products online. Eventually, 221 products, including Bright Dairy’s milk, Bee & Flower’s hair washing kits and Dunhuang’s musical instruments, were selected.
Commercial complexes, such as Wanda Plaza, Bailian Nanfang Shopping Mall and the Skymall, are also offering discounts and coupons. It is estimated that over 1 billion yuan in vouchers will be given out during the shopping festival.
The public can also participate in lucky draws when they spend 55 yuan or more and display their bills online. Prizes include Wanda Plaza vouchers and buffets at Le Meridien Hotel.
According to the district, some commercial complexes, including Wanda Plaza in Zhuanqiao Town, saw sales in the first three days of the Labor Day holiday recover to 80 to 90 percent of the same period last year.
The district government said themed promotion activities will be held on June 6, July 7, August 8, September 9 and October 10 to further promote consumption in specific industries, such as automobiles, the nightlife economy and fashion.
