Scientists and medical experts discuss technology and the anti-virus fight at the opening ceremony of the Pudong Science Festival.

The Pudong Science Festival kicked off on Tuesday with the opening of an exhibition showing the area’s efforts in the anti-virus fight.

Ward disinfection robots, nucleic acid testing kits and an intelligent evaluation system for chest scans for COVID-19 are among some of Pudong’s scientific breakthrough and technological achievements being displayed in the exhibition.

Pudong’s information technology, biological medicine and artificial intelligence industries have made great contributions. Major science facilities such as the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility have showed great support to research, according to Pudong’s technology and economy commission.

The exhibition will tour local communities and industrial parks.

At the opening ceremony, scientists, medical experts and technology company executives presented a talk about the role of technology in the anti-virus fight.

“Personally, I really feel that the rapid development of technologies has offered great help,” said Lei Han, former deputy director of Shanghai East Hospital and leader of the hospital’s medical team sent to assist Wuhan.

Lei, now Party chief at Punan Hospital, said: “At first, we had to walk back and forth, in thick protective outfits, to record patient information. Later, the use of 5G and artificial intelligence allowed us to do the job by just speaking.”

He added: “Remote CT scanning systems and medical robots ensured our safety.”
