The suspect is caught on camera walking in the street after stealing a bottle of wine during a charity event.

A man has been caught after stealing an expensive bottle of wine during a charity event.

Police in Huangpu District said on Monday they began an investigation on August 20 after a report from a woman surnamed Liu.

Liu said the wine, worth about 5,000 yuan (US$730), had been stolen from an office during an environmental protection event at the company on August 13.

She and her colleagues spotted an unknown man taking the bottle when reviewing surveillance footage.

Liu said her boss had become acquainted with the man at the event, but when he contacted him on WeChat he was blocked.

Police soon determined the man’s identity and apprehended him at his home. The man, surnamed Qian, still had the wine, police said.

They said Qian, a 35-year-old hospital worker, had confessed to taking the wine after he saw it through the open office door. He had signed up for the event after seeing an online advertisement.
